Washington DC Area Salary Survey Results Sept 2007 - Feb 2008
The following results are based on the 239 completed surveys.
Methodology Notes:
- Items in BOLD had 15 or more respondents. Others had 5 - 14, not a great sample size. N/A indicates we had 0 - 4 respondents in this category and could not present data.
- The survey was much more heavily weighted to families reporting than nannies. (4:1)
- No attempt was made to relate pay to number of children cared for as the analysis showed no discernible difference.
- Wages associated with the experience level of the nanny are only provided where there are sufficient respondents.

Results to Other Questions
How many children are being cared for?
one (1) child 36.1%
two (2) children 48.3%
three (3) children 13.9%
four (4) children 1.3%
one lone respondent answered 5 or more!
Nanny regularly performs the following services in addition to childcare.
Prepare children's meals when on duty 89.1%
Maintenance housework 74.4%
Children's laundry (clothes and bedding) 68.3%
Drive children to/from activities 49.5%
Parent's laundry 17.7%
Grocery Shopping 18.1%
Assist children with homework and school projects 15.7%
Other items all were reported well under 50%, with the exception of child related shopping (party gifts, school supplies) where only 9.5% of families report receiving this service but 42.5% of nannies report doing it. Heavy housework is performed by only 14%, confirming that few nannies are truly nanny/housekeepers.
And lastly, 9% of nannies prepare family meals. More families reported receiving this service than nannies reported performing them.
Paid time off...
5 - 10 days/year 38.2%
Greater than 10 days/year 55.6%
Meals while on duty... 59%
Overtime compensation... 45.8% NOTE: This has the potential to be a huge liability for families. Overtime compensation rules for nannies are discussed here. Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder was ordered by the courts to pay $44K in unpaid overtime in 2007 to his former nanny when she filed a grievance.
25.7% of nannies receive some type of health insurance benefit.
Surprisingly, just one in five nannies (21.3%) is reimbursed for the use of her personal vehicle to transport her employer's children.
92.8% of nannies are paid for all scheduled days, whether the family actually needs them or not. This number was essentially the same for full time and part time nannies.
